The American Society of Interior Designers Announces Student Award Winners

Top Achievers Recognized at SCALE: The ASID National Student Summit

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is pleased to announce the grand prize and internship winners of the 2017 ASID Student Portfolio Competition, as well as the winners of the 2017 ASID Student Chapter Awards. The winners were recognized at SCALE: The ASID National Student Summit (SCALE) at The University of Oklahoma on April 2, 2017.

“ASID is dedicated to supporting and recognizing the outstanding achievements of interior design students,” said ASID CEO, Randy Fiser. “The Student Portfolio Competition panel of judges noted that the portfolios from the top students exhibited a depth in concept that was carried throughout the design solutions from sketch to space to detail. Both judging panels found it difficult to select the winners of the Student Portfolio Competition and the Student Chapter Awards, providing me with great confidence in the future of the design industry.”

ASID Student Portfolio Competition

The ASID Student Portfolio Competition seeks to generate the best collection of student design projects in the nation. Submissions are evaluated on conceptual thought, the content of the work submitted, and the student’s record of achievement, with two rounds of online reviews and one round of finalist interviews at SCALE. The experience culminated in a presentation of their portfolios to a panel of judges in the hope of securing a 2017 internship with Gensler, HKS Architects, HOK, or Studio O+A, the 2017 internship sponsors.

The 2017 ASID Student Portfolio Competition panel of judges included Ane Rocha, design director, Gensler; Jennifer Kolstad, ASID NCIDQ, Associate AIA, VP, director of Interior Architecture, HKS Architects; Stephen Beacham, AIA, principal, director of Design, Interiors, HOK; and Neil Bartley, Associate ASID, director, Studio O+A New York.

The grand prize and internship winners were awarded with a career–centered variety of prizes. GIVING MOORE, a Foundation of Benjamin Moore & Co., presented the grand prize winner with a $5,000 scholarship and each of the internship winners with a $2,500 scholarship, while Hansgrohe provided the top winners with a complimentary trip to the Hansgrohe Aquademie in Atlanta, June 4–6, 2017. The Student Portfolio Competition grand prize winner will also be honored on stage at Celebration – The ASID Awards Gala in San Diego on July 15, 2017.

About ASID

The American Society of Interior Designers believes that design transforms lives. ASID serves the full range of the interior design profession and practice through the Society’s programs, networks, and advocacy. We thrive on the strength of cross-functional and interdisciplinary relationships among designers of all specialties, including workplace, healthcare, retail and hospitality, education, institutional, and residential. We lead interior designers in shared conversations around topics that matter: from evidence-based and humancentric design to social responsibility, wellbeing, and sustainability. We showcase the impact of design on the human experience and the value interior designers provide.

ASID was founded over 40 years ago when two organizations became one, but its legacy dates back to the early 1930s. As we celebrate nearly 85 years of industry leadership, we are leading the future of interior design, continuing to integrate the advantages of local connections with national reach, of small firms with big, and of the places we live with the places we work, play, and heal.
